United We Cure

There is a battle we are in.  It’s time we fight back and put an end to the pain, suffering and fear.  Cancer has taken too many lives and has destroyed too many futures.  Put on your armor and join me in this revolution to fight for a world without blood cancer.

I am running for the Man or Woman of the Year (MWOY) fundraising campaign  for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).  This campaign is a fundraising competition to compete for the title of Man or Woman of the Year and fund raise for cancer research and support cancer patients and their families.  Join me in a revolution to fight for a world without blood cancer.

I came to the United States as an exchange student when I was 14.  A year before I left for the U.S.A. my aunt was diagnosed with leukemia.  She was two months away from getting married.  The doctors in Vietnam told us she needed to go through treatment including bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy.  I witnessed my aunt, the one who taught me to dance and sing, lose her hair, her voice, and her energy.  During this time she fought like the true heroine she was.  Yet, I felt helpless and scared. There was so much I wanted to do for her but so little I could do.  I left Vietnam after my aunt’s first chemotherapy treatment praying that she would pull through and that she would be there when I came back home.  I remember clearly the day my mother called me on the phone from Vietnam and told me the news about my aunt.  She passed away a year after I arrived in the U.S.A.

The unfortunate truth is that many of us have found ourselves in a place where we have felt helpless and desperate for hope.  Another powerful truth is that many of us have victoriously overcome cancer.  Recently my host brother, who bravely fought against Burkitt lymphoma cancer at the age of 48, reached his third anniversary of being declared cancer free.  Victory against cancer is possible. This campaign to fundraise for LLS is my way, our way to fight this battle against helplessness, fuel hope, and beat cancer.

There are 13 candidates in MN that were nominated by the board of LLS to fund raise and compete for the title. The campaign started on 03/09/2017 and will end on 05/20/2017 with a gala dinner at the Marriot Center  where all the candidates get together and celebrate. During this 10 weeks, there will be more events such as

  • “United for LLS” kickoff event on April 30th
  • 7 days journey to find the cure from May 1st- May 6th, etc.
  • United for LLS concert
