From East to West #UnitedWeCure

Ten weeks ago I embarked on this journey to fund raise for the Leukemia & Lymphoma society.  From the beginning, the campaign was about celebrating heroes: my aunt who must be partying up in heaven now with the result of our campaign, my brother Mike who fought bravely against Burkitt Lymphoma and won.  Because of heroes like them, we fight for a world without cancer. Ten weeks and an army of fighters later, we have raised $34,799 together.

Standing there at the gala event I was humbled by the people I loved who showed up to support the campaign.  The names of financial supporters that appeared on my campaign page reminded me how blessed I am.  During our campaign, more than 12 different restaurants united together for a 7-day journey to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for blood cancer.  More than 600 people were at the gala event bidding on our silent  and live auction items that were donated to our campaign.

There are no words that I can use to express how grateful I am to have friends who pushed me when I was discouraged, to have a church family who spend endless hours praying for me, to have families from both ends of the world to love and inspire me, to have colleagues and mentors from my company who said yes to this cause and believed in me.

So, cheers to a successful campaign. Cheers to the heroes who inspired this campaign. Let us celebrate the power of unity that brought us all together regardless of our race, our age, our immigration status in this country, our income level, or our genders.  #UnitedWeCure

Unite for LLS kickoff party a success! Now let’s go on a 7-day journey to find the cure (05/01-05/07)

Great turn out yesterday!!! Thank you so much Chad Moreau and Katy Dimick for being such a great partner in making this event possible and successful. A great thank you to Jeff Erkkila and James Dolan for hosting and donating your amazingly delicious drinks and tacos. Thank you all the bartenders that made it yesterday to help out with the punch and for Tattersall Distilling and Jeff Rogers for your donation. In just more than 2 hours we fundraised over $500 to send directly to the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Minnesota Chapter for the Man & Woman of the Year – Minnesota Chapter. #unitedwecure. So excited for the 7 days journey ahead of us from May 1-7th! See you all there supporting a great cause and our local businesses.

My “why”

May 20th, the last day of this fundraising campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), is approaching.  We are hosting a happy hour for LLS this Sunday at Mercado by Earl Giles with bartender’s featured specialty punch.  From May 1st – May 7th, local restaurants in the Twin Cities are uniting by providing a feature drink on their menu, with proceeds to be donated.  I still need to follow up with a great deal of contacts in order to gather more financial support for the campaign.  My phone is lighting up with work emails late into the night.  The washer’s spin cycle stopped working leaving my entire laundry load soaked in water.  Minneapolis is raining, and my cat just knocked all of her water all over the floor this afternoon.  Life moves so fast, and most of the time it seems like I am hanging on by a thread.

Why do I this?  Why do we do this?  What is it about this campaign that moves us to overcome our fear of rejection, to block out shyness when asking for money, and to open our heart and give?

14 years ago my aunt promised me that she would come to the U.S. and look after me when I come to the U.S.A.  Leukemia took her away.  Her promise was never fulfilled. That was the first time that I heard of this disease, and it took the one I loved.  Recently, 6 year old Sophia, a LLS Honored Heroes earned her angel wings after a 1 year battle with leukemia.  Yesterday, a friend told me how she’d also lost a friend to leukemia.  These stories are tragic, but I’m not telling them to sadden us all.  Instead, they should ignite in us a fire to fight back.  These people we love and lost have fought with everything they had, and that strength should power us to do more.  We need them to know that in the midst of the craziness of our daily life, the unexpected events of this world, they are not forgotten.  We have a purpose, we have a mission, a united mission: to bring hope in blood cancer treatment, to protect and provide for current patients and their families.

So, stand with me as we fight this battle along with my aunt, with Sophia and with many other heroes.  Help me spread the words and fund raise for this campaign.  #UnitedWeCure #JointheRevolution.

I’ll leave you with this quote: “I wondered why somebody didn’t do something more. Then, I realized I was that somebody.”

“United for LLS” Kickoff Happy Hour @ Mercado by Earl Giles

Mercado by Earl Giles has been a tremendous partner in this fundraising effort for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).  In partnership with the United States Bartender Guild, MN chapter, Katy Dimik and Chad Moreau, I’m so excited to tell you about the upcoming “Unite for LLS” kickoff party on  April 30th from 2pm – 5pm at Mercado 2900 Lyndale Ave in Minneapolis.

We will have donated beer, punch, and food from Mercado, Diageo, Southern Wine and Spirits, and Excelsior Brewing.  All proceeds will go to the LLS fundraiser.

This happy hour will kick off our “7 Day Journey to find the cure” fundraising initiative to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) between May 1st – May 7th.

  • During this “7 Day Journey to find the cure” there will be local restaurants that would offer 1-3 featured cocktails on their menus.  $1 from the sale of each cocktail will be donated to LLS.

Let’s have a blast, raise our glasses to the local restaurants (more details to come) who support such an amazing cause and cure cancer!  #UnitedWeCure #Jointherevolution

What is this fundraising campaign Tina is doing?

There have been questions about the fundraising campaign that I am doing.  Here’s a load down:

I am running for the Man or Woman of the Year (MWOY) fundraising campaign  for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).  This campaign is a fundraising competition to compete for the title of Man or Woman of the Year and fund raise for cancer research and support cancer patients and their families.  There are 13 candidates in MN that were nominated by the board of LLS to fund raise and compete for the title. The campaign started on 03/09/2017 and will end on 05/20/2017 with a gala dinner at the Marriot Center  where all the candidates get together and celebrate.

During this 10 weeks, there will be more events such as

  • “United for LLS” kickoff event on April 30th
  • 7 days journey to find the cure from May 1st- May 6th, etc.
  • United for LLS concert

When you subscribe to this site, or click on the Campaign Updates & Events link you can get updates to all of these upcoming exciting events.
